Patriot's Jakai Moore had nine points and five rebounds Thursday during a 75-70 win over South Lakes.

Devon Parrish scored 28 points Thursday to lead the Patriot Pioneers to a season-opening 75-70 victory over South Lakes’ boys basketball team at home in Nokesville. 

He made 8 of 13 field goals (62 percent), including 5 of 6 3-pointers (83 percent), and added 7 of 8 free throw shooting to help Patriot take a 19-12 lead in the first quarter, a 35-28 halftime advantage and a 50-45 lead entering the fourth period.

Hagen Vandiver added 18 points, Yusef Salih had 10 and Jakai Moore had nine. Vandiver also led the Pioneers with seven rebounds and five assists, while Moore had five rebounds and Devon Parrish had four.

Parrish added three assists while Salih and Marcus Taylor had two steals each.

Brentsville girls basketball 21, Osbourn 19

The Brentsville Tigers out-performed Osbourn from the free-throw line Thursday to win a defensive battle 21-19 during the Forest Park Tip-off girls basketball tournament on the road in Woodbridge.

Brentsville made 10 of 19 free throws to compensate for only five field goals, while the Eagles made eight field goals but only 2 of 8 free throws. So Osbourn’s record fell to 1-2 while the Tigers improved to 2-0 after entering halftime in a 10-10 tie.

Catherine Forst led Brentsville with 5-for-6 free throw shooting for five points, while Caiyiah Smith made 2 of 4 en route to nine points. Shannon Hutchens added four points, while the Eagles’ Love Delaney and Talia Prosper had five points each with Stephanie Taylor adding four.
