Colgan won the Cardinal District softball tournament championship Friday.

Morgan Thornton pitched a one-hitter Friday to help the Colgan Sharks win the Cardinal District tournament championship by beating Hylton 9-2 in the softball final at home in Manassas. 

She struck out eight while allowing only one earned run (one unearned) with zero walks over seven innings to give Colgan an 18-5 record while dropping the Bulldogs to 16-6. Offensively, Kendall Bentley had two runs, an RBI and walk on 1-for-2 hitting, while Halee Hawkins went 2-for-4 with two steals, a run and RBI.

Kayla Horesky added two runs and two walks on 1-for-1 hitting, while Caite Hopkins went 1-for-3 with two runs and Richelle Hortsman had two RBIs with a run on 0-for-3 hitting. So the Sharks amassed four runs in both the second and third innings to pull away.

For Hylton, Abby Lutz went 1-for-3 with a double, steal and run.


Potomac won the Cardinal District baseball tournament Friday.

Potomac baseball 13, Forest Park 5

Matt Drumgold's four-RBI night helped the Potomac Panthers rally from an early two-run deficit to win the Cardinal District tournament championship Friday with a 13-5 victory over Forest Park during the baseball final at home in Dumfries. 

He finished 3-for-4 with a run and double to give Potomac a 19-3 record while dropping the Bruins to 12-10 despite the 2-0 lead that Forest Park took in the top of the first inning. The Panthers rallied with a six-run second inning and four-run third. Scoring three runs each were Adrian Touch (3-for-4, double) and Josue Cumba (0-for-4, three steals, two RBIs, walk), while Braden Mack went 2-for-3 with two RBIs, a run and walk.

Ben Thomas added two runs on 2-for-4 hitting and Brody Mack went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, a double and walk, while Julian Cumba went 1-for-3 with two steals, a run and walk.

So Braden Mack earned the victory as a relief pitcher by striking out six and allowing only one hit and zero walks over three innings with the Panthers’ defense finishing without an error. For Forest Park, Todd Dearborn and James Dumoulin each went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI. Dumoulin also had a double and steal, while Chase Stoltman went 2-for-4 with a run.
