The Brentsville Tigers fell only one point short of winning their third competition cheer state championship in history Saturday.
They finished as the Class 3 state runner-up at Virginia Commonwealth University by composing a score of 272.5. That distanced them from third-place Tabb, but kept them behind champion Cave Spring (273.5).
In fact, Brentsville finished first in the preliminary round, beating Cave Spring 260.5-256, but the teams swapped positions in the finals. So the Tigers added to a championship resume that includes the 2013 Class 3A state title and the 2007 Group AA state championship.
Regardless, 2018 was one of Brentsville’s best seasons in history thanks to the Region 3B title it won Oct. 24 at Warren County. The Tigers dominated the runner-up Wildcats 270.5-241 with Manassas Park fifth at 180.5. That gave Brentsvillle its third region championship after also winning in 2014 and 2007.
Plus, the Tigers won their sixth consecutive conference-level title last month by winning the Class 3 Northwestern District meet.
Also at VCU on Saturday, the Battlefield Bobcats finished third in the Class 6 state competition. They fell only five points short of winning the title.
Grassfield claimed the championship with a score of 281.5, while Robinson placed second with a 278 and Battlefield posted a 277.5. The Bobcats also took third in the preliminary round with a 269 behind Robinson (277.5) and Grassfield (272).
Battlefield posted a similar score Oct. 24 during the Region 6D meet at Chantilly. The Bobcats’ 271 clinched the region championship over runner-up Chantilly (262) with Patriot fourth (258.5).
Elsewhere, Hylton placed third in the Region 6C meet Oct. 27 on its home court with a score of 256 behind champion Robinson (292.5) and runner-up West Springfield (263).
