A letterbox with the inscription Letter to the editor

“I can’t breathe.” These were the last few words of an innocent man named George Floyd, as he begged for his life before being suffocated to death. George Floyd, along with countless other African Americans, have been unjustly murdered simply because they are black.

The hypocrisy of our country says to live by life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Yet our criminal justice system, healthcare system, and president are racist and a cause for disgust and anger.

As an American Muslim, I will stand with my black brothers and sisters until the disease of racism is eliminated from this country and the world. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “O People, your Lord is one, you are the progeny of the same father who was created from dust. Hence it is not permissible for you to make any discrimination between high and low. Neither an Arab has superiority over a non-Arab, nor a non-Arab over an Arab. A white person is not superior to a black person, nor a black is superior to a white.”

I choose not to remain quiet in a country that does not show basic respect to its people. Not a single one of these innocent people deserved this reality. The change that is needed is centuries overdue, but I will not stay quiet until my generation brings an end to racism.

Ms Tayyeb

I have always questioned the deafening silence from the American Muslim community when Muslims commit heinous atrocities around the world. Slicing off heads, burnings, explosions (lets skip 911 for now) all in the name of your Prophet. Why is it we never see these pious communities of peaceful Islam writing comment like you just did?

When our journalists had their throats slit - I am sure they could not breath - but I guess that was not worth the time to write about . When a suicide bomber destroys hundreds of lives (usually Muslim) are you writing about and being so disturbed as nails and shrapnel penetrate the bodies of children?

Talk about Hypocrisy...

Kevin Raymond

American Muslims have brought with themselves a beautiful culture. They help to take care of the poor in our communities and participate in political and community activities. They have outstanding leaders and bring higher culture to our communities.

Like honor killings & female genital mutilation, wonderful culture, enjoy.

weouchere, I thought you knew what "presumption" means. I hope neither you nor I are in the situation such as that of Mr. Floyd. He was not found "guilty" in a court of law. Hence, he was innocent. A person who was a "police officer" took the law into his own hands. If you think this is okay, I am sorry -- for you and for me and all citizens of this country. Wish you well. I promise to not respond to your comments again. I hope neither you nor your family ever face such brutality. Unfortunately for all of us, it could happen. If you care to read a book, read a book by Sinclair Lewis, "It Can't Happen Here,"written around 1936. I read it, and I did not sleep for weeks. Best to you and your family.

citizenm - thank you for the kind words, I wish the same for you as well. Apparently I haven't done a good job of expressing myself. What happened to George Floyd is unacceptable, I think most people agree with that. As I said before - it is a giant leap to conclude this happened to him SOLELY because he was black. I think that idiot cop was capable of doing that to just about anyone. Another thing that is unacceptable is the reaction some people have had as a result of this injustice. I believe this has taken away some of the positive changes that could have come out of this. I also believe there are factions out there taking advantage of this discord that couldn't care less about the welfare of black people - starting with Black Lives Matter. Go read their website and see how that impacts your sleep. Take care.

Did Muhammad ever fight for justice or subjugation?

I appreciate Citizen Tayyeb’s views. Based on the many painful videos we saw of Mr. Floyd’s treatment, I believe it is fair to say Mr. Floyd was an innocent man. I believe that all criminal suspects are presumed to be innocent until found guilty in a court of law in the United States. I would be careful of calling anyone a “moron” or posting bunches of question marks unless the two persons who rendered opinions know for certain that the law has changed.

weouchere

I guess you aren't so bright yourself. Being "presumed" innocent doesn't mean that you are. This is all so simple - Don't Resist=Don't get Killed.

weouchere

You are obviously a moron. First, he was far from an innocent man - he was a career criminal high on drugs at the time. And second - how can you, or anyone else for that matter, possibly know this happened only because he was black? Here is a hint - you can't.

Kevin Raymond

How do you know all this weouchere? You too are a moron!!!!

OBLUE

innocent man ?????
