UPDATED: A Maryland man was arrested Sunday in connection with a Saturday hit-and-run in Fauquier County that resulted in the death of a 2-year-old child.

Jose Santiago Mendoza, 65, of Bladensburg, Maryland, has been charged with hit-and-run resulting in death or injury in connection with the incident, the Fauquier County Sheriff's Office said Sunday.

Officers responded to the intersection of U.S. 29 and Della Street in Opal at about 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 16, to find that a child had been struck while standing in the roadway. The child was attended to by a motorist until rescue personnel arrived.

First responders administered first aid and transported the toddler to Fauquier Hospital, where the child later died from their injuries, Sgt. Steven Lewis, spokesman for the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office, said Sunday.

The striking vehicle did not stop. It is not immediately clear whether the child was standing alone in the road when they were struck by the vehicle. There is a gas station in the area of the incident.

The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash with assistance from the county's department of social services, Lewis said.
