The library will be closing beginning January 15 and will re-open just in time for Summer Reading.
How does a state-of-the-art Makerspace, a new space for RELIC (the Ruth E. Lloyd Information Center for Genealogy and Local History), and a third venue for U.S. Passport Services sound? All of this - and more - is coming to Central Community Library in just a few months. The library, part of the Prince William Public Library System (PWPLS), will be closed beginning January 15, 2020, for extensive renovations to better serve the greater Prince William community.
Central Community Library had more than 160,000 visits in Fiscal Year 2019 and its programs were attended by more than 20,000 patrons. While Central continues to be a popular library for surrounding residents, it has recently been identified as a venue to try a new approach in offering library services. Before this new model can be implemented, the library must undergo necessary renovations beginning January 15 with an expected re-open date of June 2020. During the renovation period, Central's book drop will remain open and all book requests can be picked up at Bull Run Regional Library or another branch at the patron's choosing.
"The 'new' Central Community Library model will offer patrons a unique experience unlike any other in the county," remarks Deborah L. Wright, PWPLS Library Director. "The library will have the intimate feel offered by our neighborhood libraries, as well as enhanced services and programs patrons experience in a community library setting."
What new improvements and enhancements can patrons expect when Central Community Library reopens?
Central's Makerspace Studio 8601 will offer dynamic programming and educational experiences, including Cricut vinyl cutters, sewing machines, and coding toys like Spheros, Ozobots, and Makey Makey.
RELIC will be moving back to Central in a new enclosed space, and will include all of RELIC's materials, including its microfiche readers.
U.S. Passport Services: Previously offered only at Haymarket Gainesville and Potomac Community Libraries, Central's "central" location in the county makes it a great venue to offer U.S. Passport Services.
The new enhanced layout will allow for patrons to have even more access to public access computers, printers, copiers and scanners, mobile printing, and reliable Wi-Fi.
Not only will Central Community Library have more open space for programming and general enjoyment of the library, it will also offer a strategically designed layout to allow for a better flow, as well as more study and conference rooms for patrons, including:
- Redesigned Children's Area
- Community Room booking for our civic organizations
- One Quiet Study Room
- Two Small Individual Study/Conference Rooms for up to four people
CONTINUED COMMITMENT TO OUR PATRONS
Programming: Central is re-opening just in time for Summer Reading, including offering quality programming.
Staff Support: Central will have a redesigned full-service concierge desk with reference and circulation services.
Library Materials: We will continue to offer a full-range of library materials: books, children's materials, audio-visual, and periodicals as well as access to our Digital Library and its resources through public access computers.
Central's bathrooms will be renovated so that they will be expanded and made ADA Compliant.
New, inviting seating will be available, both in the study rooms and open-space areas.
While Central is undergoing renovations, the other 10 branches throughout the county will continue to offer quality services and programs that patrons have come to expect. In addition, library digital services will not be impacted and patrons who frequent Central Community Library can continue to access digital services without issue. PWPLS will continue to provide status updates as they occur on pwcgov.org/library.
